Lost Gem Alert!!

The Beach Boys – Getcha Back

As we ease into summer, I’m joyfully grooving on some of my older Beach Boys stuff which is and always will be quintessentially summer! I’m a big Beach Boys fan.. in fact most people I know tend to dig on The Beach Boys! The surfer sound was certainly distinctive to California sound of the early 60′s, pre-British invasion era.

Unfortunately come the 80′s, the boys had only a few brief moments to really shine…

This particular track I dub a Lost Gem. It was the first single released off of a 1985 album, the first to be released after the tragic drowning of brother and drummer Dennis Wilson.

While it’s certainly 80′s-esque, it still employs signature Beach Boys sound utilizing harmony and an otherwise somber lyric by Mike Love. Classic boy-girl tussle that always makes for go-to pop music.

I can only imagine that a track like this escaped most 80′s kids, but chances are theĀ  die-hard Beach Boys fans may be aware of it, especially if they were aware of the music that was present in ’85. If you missed this, I hope it comes as a real treat for you. Enjoy and think of summer.

What a perfect post for the summer solstice! My father was a big beach boys fan when I was a little kid and as a result I became one too. I really love this song. I will also admit the guilty pleasure of really liking most of Still Cruisin’ especially the title track and Somewhere Near Japan.

The boys of summer have reunited and are back on tour promoting a brand new album. This song easily gets overlooked when you think of the Beach Boys. Thanks for reminding me about this one Chris.
