Pet Shop Boys (featuring Dusty Springfield) – What Have I Done To Deserve This? (Extended Mix) (1987)

My favorite track from the Pet Shop Boys which for all intensive purpose IS a duet, and should be regarded as so, thanks to the inclusion of Dusty Springfield. It’s fairly safe to say that this was a pretty odd pairing, but it just goes to show you what incredible magic can occur when among opposites.

I can clearly remember this song being a huge hit back in 1987 and it was all over the radio, non-stop, and would become a #2 hit on the Billboard charts.

It’s clear to me that Dusty was certainly tapping into some good karma here.. between this track (which by the way, would be the biggest hit she ever had) and the released version of the “Growing Pains” theme the next year, Dusty was having quite a resurgence in her career.

This is the cool “extended mix” that’s pulled from the UK 12″ single. Hope you all dig it as I do. And if you like it, than please pass it along so others can enjoy it to. Help me track down some more 80′s kids who’ll enjoy this kind of treatment :)

Was privileged to discuss it in my interview with the song’s co-writer Allee Willis > http://oldschool.tblog.com/post/1970118423 > where you will find out, among other things, that Springfield needed some real convincing in order to participate.

The song as always is great, but I must confess an ignorance about the show that you mentioned above. I love learning new things from you!

4 Jef February 25, 2013 at 11:49 PM: “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” was originally supposed to be on the Pet Shop Boys’ first album, Please, and was going to be recorded as a duet with Tessa Niles, if I remember correctly. OldSchool80s is right about Dusty Springfield; only Neil and Chris’ tenacity got her to record it. If you haven’t read Chris Heath’s book, Literally, about following the Pet Shop Boys on their world tour, it’s a good read.
