George Michael – Faith (album mix)
Unless you were hiding underneath a rock in 1987 you would recall that George Michael and his new Faith image was everywhere!
Gone were the blissful Wham! days in favor of a more gritty pop image (aka “the bubble with the stubble”) with the whole guitar, leather jacket, and mirror shades bit propelling George into mega-star status.
This song is amazing in every sense of the word, from it’s fantastic lyrics to very simple musical construction. Take a good listen with headphones.. there really isn’t a lot going on here, it’s just layered brilliantly. Rounded out by great hooks!
I do remember growing very sick of this song at the time. Radio has this magic ability to just force feed you tunes, even the good one’s, to the point that even your stereo speakers want to throw up! Obviously I don’t remotely feel this way about this track anymore, and tend to play it over and over again. Whenever I hear this it takes me back to ’87 and the joy of being a kid again.
[However, I'll never forget how completely disgusted I was when a hardcore version of this track turned up in the late 90's by a group that will remain nameless. Oh the horror! So incredibly disrespectful. Hope those son of bitches are emptying trash cans somewhere now!]
Anyway, back to better things… this is the full album version that radio tends to chop the beginning off of, which is understandable as it’s a slow start. You’ll notice that the intro (which slowly comes creeping in..) is actually the notes to Wham!’s “Freedom” played on (I think) harpsichord, in an almost funeral like preface. Was this George’s way of letting the public know Wham! was dead? Or was he simply paying homage to an era gone by? The answer simply.. probably both.

Love that phrase, “the bubble with the stubble,” It’s perfect, much like this song!
I’ve always liked the album version with the gospel intro the best. This is a song that never fails to make me happy. I put it on almost every 80′s mix I make. I will totally admit that I liked the Seether cover of Careless Whisper. I thought it was clever.
One of the best voices in the biz !!
