Lost Gem Alert!!
Deon Estus featuring George Michael – Heaven Help Me
One of my favorite lost gems of the late 80′s.. and an amazing track!!
Deon Estus is probably best known (or unknown) as Wham’s bass player. His musical friendship with George Michael would continue into his hugely successful solo career, and as far as I know continues a friendship with Andrew Ridgely as well.
In ’89, near the end of the Faith tour, Deon would release a solo record which included this high charting hit which was co-written and produced by George, in addition to his complimentary backing vocals.
There’s a bit of melodic magic in this track in spite of the sadness in tone.. from the guitar work, to the horn, to the somber elegance in the keyboard notes. Truly a smooth groove of pop brilliance worth swimming in.
The lyrics can only be defined as devastation and despair, when your love has moved on and the hole in your heart has taken an even harder kick than the initial hit. To the point that it has you praying to the heavens even if results are nowhere in sight. Begging for strength, for help…
If you want it, you can have it, that’s what you said
But I don’t want the things that you leave behind
Take the pictures, take the windows and the walls
But, baby, won’t you leave me
My peace of mind
Oh, such a waste of time
Oh, such a waste
I still want you, baby
Heaven help me
(Heaven help me)
Talk to strangers
(Talk to strangers)
Heaven help me over you
(Help me over you)
I can’t seem to take these changes
Everything reminds my heart of you
Thought the first time was the last time of being apart
Now I find I’m having to search again
It’ll happen, it’s gotta happen, come together
I just wish somebody would tell me when
Oh, such a waste of time
Oh, such a waste
I still want you, baby
Heaven help me
(Heaven help me)
Talk to strangers
(Talk to strangers)
Heaven help me over you
(Help me over you)
I can’t seem to take these changes
Everything reminds my heart of you
Heaven help, Heaven help
Heaven, Heaven
Heaven help me
Heaven help, Heaven help
Heaven, Heaven
Heaven help me
Heaven help me
(Heaven help me)
Talk to strangers
(Talk to strangers)
Heaven help me over you
(Help me over you)
I can’t seem to take these changes
Everything reminds my heart of you
You’re someone else’s lady
So sad without you, darling
The gods of love can’t help me now
Heaven help, Heaven help
Heaven, Heaven
Heaven help me…

Wow. When was the last time you heard this song on the radio. Lost gem for sure. Thanks again Chris.
@ Santi Paradoa – And Deon himself was nice enough to retweet this post and send his thanks. How awesome is that!
Deon is an awesome guy! One of my favorites. He was one of my very first interviews.
And a spectacular bass player.
I remember when this song came out I originally thought it was a George Michael song because his backing vocals really make the track extra special.
Thank you for posting this. I appreciate your kind words!
@ Deon Estus – No, thank you my friend. Can’t even begin to tell you how much your talents have been a part of the soundtrack to my life. Always loved this song and the “Spell” album. Not to mention all your backbone grooves to the Wham! albums. I think everyone here on the blog knows what a big Wham! fan I am, to which your contributions are crucial. Your kindness in taking the time to comment on this post has truly made my day!! :)
@ OldSchool80s – Allow me to plug that interview for you, I really enjoyed it myself. I think it’s so great that he did this interview for you; http://oldschool.tblog.com/post/1970107299 such a nice guy!
